College Textbooks: Why are they so expensive?

The high prices of college textbooks have been a continuous woe for students all around the world for many years. However, it is important to consider the reasons as to why to they are so expensive. Ipad Downloads – Interesting iPad Usage Statistics – Who Owns Them and Why?

The iPad has had one of the most successful and long-awaited releases of an electronic device in recent years. It has been on the market for a little while now and is still going strong in its sales, with the likely-hood of even higher sales coming for this holiday season. What is the iPad being used for? Who is buying iPads? Why are they buying the iPad? A couple of recent studies by Yahoo and Resolve Market Research reveal some interesting statistics regarding these questions.

Yahoo found that the iPad is very popular with the female demographic. It only had 34 percent female users when released, but now that number has now grown to a staggering 39 percent! The iPad does appeal to women, with its portability and easy of use. It does have some aesthetic appeal and is probably seen as a more fashionable portal laptop device to some.

Yahoo found that the age group drawn to purchasing the Apple iPad was between the ages of 35 and 44. 21-29 year olds were second, trailed by those aged 45-54. These numbers do seem accurate, because at the 35-44 age group many will have more disposable income than the younger group which might desire the device the most. The older demographic may not be used to or influenced by such technologically advanced tablets and would probably be happy with the conventional laptop or desktop computer.

The reason for people buying the iPad is revealed. It is said that the main reason consumers were looking to buy the product was for entertainment purposes. Some other reasons included its “cool factor,” its convenience, easy of use and of course, the Apple brand name. The study by Resolve Market Research also asked why those who did not plan to purchase an iPad arrived at their decision. The majority of 54 percent claimed that they did not have a dedicated use for the product, while the other 46 percent claimed that it was simply too expensive. Perhaps some will wait until the iPad price drops in the future after the buzz wears down.

The Resolve study also discovered some interesting numbers regarding the iPad and competition versus other devices. It revealed that almost 49 percent of Apple iPad owners would not purchase an e-reader, such as the Amazon Kindle. Furthermore, 38 percent would not look to buy a portable gaming system, such as the Nintendo 3DS or PSP GO and a further 32 percent ruled out buying a laptop or Netbook. Is the iPad the jack of all trades? I don’t think the iPad could say it’s the master at any and can it do the jobs a laptop can, better?

The past couple years have been an interesting time for book readers. We have seen quite a few eReader devices released from companies like Amazon, Sony, and Barnes and Noble. Now that the iPad has been released, another major player has entered the eReader market.

Ultimately, choosing an eReader is a matter of personal preference. All devices have pros and cons. This article will take a look at some of the differences between Amzon’s Kindle and Apple’s iPad.

1. Full Color Vs. Black and White

While the Kindle utilizes an e-ink black and white display, the iPad uses a full color computer display. The e-ink display is easier on your eyes. However, the iPad display, is certainly much more attractive. It will also be possible for authors to include extras in their books that would never be possible with a Kindle. You might expect exclusive author interviews or a full-color interactive map of Middle Earth when you are reading Lord of the Rings.

2. Battery Life

One thing that has contributed to the rave reviews of the iPad is its long battery life. You can use the device for up to ten hours at a time. While this is pretty good, the Kindle’s battery life is even better. The Kindle can hold a battery charge for up to 2 weeks as long as the wireless connection isn’t turned on. Ten hours will probably be plenty of battery juice as long as you can charge it up every night, but if you often take long vacations off the grid, the Kindle may be the better choice.

This has always been perhaps the most important factor in an eReader. If you don’t have access to the book you want to read, then what is the point of having an eReader? This has also been the primary reason that Kindle has always been number one. After all, Amazon is the world’s #1 bookseller, so it is natural that they would have the largest selection of books for the Kindle. However, the iPad book selection is practically guaranteed to surpass that of the Kindle. The reason is that in 2009 Amazon developed a Kindle App for Apple. This app allows users to access the Kindle Store and download books directly to their iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad. iPad users will not only have access to the Kindle store, but they’ll also have access to Apple’s new iBookstore. If an iPad user can’t find the book he wants in the iBookstore, he can simply peruse over to the Kindle store to find it. Kindle users won’t have this luxury.

eBook Prices: Deals and Steals

For much the same reason as above, iPad users will always be able to get the best book price. While Kindle users will be forced to pay the price at which Amazon offers the book, iPad users will be able to compare prices between the two stores. The App Store also allows free downloads, an option not available in the Amazon store.

Weight: Lugging Around Your eBooks

The Kindle easily wins this one. One thing many iPad users have noticed is that the device is heavier than they expected. While much of this can be attributed to the quality of the device, the fact is that your arms and hands may grow weary from holding 1.5 lbs in front of you for a long period of time. The Kindle weighs less than half as much as the iPad, and it is much more comparable in weight to a standard sized paperback.

Conclusion: Choosing the Best eReader

Although there are pros and cons to each device, each user must prioritize their needs to decide which device is best for them. Overall, the iPad is probably a better value for most readers. The battery life isn’t much of an issue, and the book price and selection is a huge factor for the heavy reader. Additionally, while the Kindle is a dedicated book reader, the iPad is a multimedia device for complete entertainment where users can watch videos, run applications, and browse the full Internet.

Ipad Downloads – How to Back Up and Restore Your iPad’s Data and Settings

A very common reason you have problems with your iPad is that the settings have been corrupted. You can restore your iPad to its original settings to fix any issues that come about due to corrupted settings. iTunes has a restore function that makes fixing your iPad simple. It works virtually the same way as restoring your iPod or iPhone if you have experiencing restoring those devices. If you can connect your iPad to iTunes with iTunes recognizing your device, follow the steps below to backup or restore your iPad. If for some reason you connect your iPad to iTunes and it does not show up on your computer. Please try a soft or hard reset. You can visit our directions here (tri – link to appropriate article) for step by step instructions on resetting your device.

Backing up and Restoring your Apple iPad.

1. Using the cable provided, connect your iPad to your computer.

2. Launch iTunes and make sure your device appears on iTunes. In iTunes, click your iPad in the Devices list.

3. Right click (if you have a PC) and click Sync. This might take a while depending on much data you have but after your device finishes syncing, iTunes will have copies of your iPad data stored on your computer.

4. You can double check that your iPad data is backed up. Go to Preferences in iTunes-> Preferences, and then click the “Devices tab.” There should be a Device Backup List with your iPad listed.

5. Click the” Summary tab”.

6. Click “Restore”. You will see a prompt by iTunes asking if you want to restore, click confirm.

7. Click “Restore”.

8. Some of you might receive a dialog box asking if you want to update your iPad software. If you receive this prompt, click “Next” and then click “Agree.” What will happen is iTunes downloads the software and backs up your iPad data before it restores the original settings and software. After your iPad restarts from the restoration, iTunes automatically connects to your iPad and begins the wizard that sets up your iPad.

9. Select the Restore from the backup of option.

10. Choose the backup files you want to restore. Some of you might have a couple backup copies depending on the frequency of your backups.

11. Click “Continue”. iTunes restores your archived data, restarts your iPad, and then syncs the iPad.

Security Notes: If you do not encrypt your files, your backup data files will house your private or confidential data. You can add a password to your backup archives by checking the Encrypt iPad check box in the Summary tab. It will then prompt you to choose a password.

Can you copy iPad apps to a second iPad?

I have an iPad for home which I use all the time and am considering getting a second one for work, if I do that, will I be able to copy all of my apps which I've bought onto the second iPad? They will use the same iTunes login, but I didn't know if I could do this or if I would be expected to repurchase all these apps to work on the second device.
